Dental cleaning and scaling: benefits, frequency and sensitivity
Professional cleaning removes hardened deposits a toothbrush cannot. Here is what it does—and what it does not do.

Dental scaling removes plaque, hardened calculus and surface stain from around teeth and the gumline. Calculus cannot be brushed away at home, and leaving it in place can maintain gum inflammation even when brushing improves.
Does scaling make teeth weak?
Correct professional scaling does not shave enamel or loosen healthy teeth. When thick calculus is removed, spaces or mobility caused by existing gum disease may become noticeable. The cleaning revealed the condition; it did not create the bone loss.
Ultrasonic instruments use vibration and water, while hand instruments refine deposits. The approach is adapted to sensitivity, restorations, implants and gum-pocket depth.
Why teeth can feel sensitive afterward
If roots were covered by calculus or gums were inflamed, cold sensitivity can occur temporarily after cleaning. A desensitising toothpaste and the clinic’s aftercare advice can help. Persistent or sharp sensitivity should be checked for decay, cracks or recession.
Some patients need only routine cleaning above the gumline. Established gum disease may require deeper cleaning, local anaesthetic and ongoing periodontal maintenance.
How often should you have a cleaning?
A universal six-month interval is not right for everyone. Gum health, calculus build-up, decay risk, implants, orthodontic appliances, smoking, diabetes and home care all influence recall timing.
Your appointment should include more than polishing. A risk-based examination can check gums, teeth, restorations, bite and soft tissues, then recommend an interval based on findings.
Frequently asked questions
Is dental scaling painful?
Many routine cleanings cause little discomfort. Inflamed gums, sensitivity or deeper deposits may require a gentler staged approach or local anaesthetic.
Can scaling remove yellow tooth colour?
It removes external stain and deposits, but it does not bleach the natural internal shade of enamel or dentine.
