The pain that brings someone to the dentist is often more intense than the root canal treatment itself. Local anaesthetic is used to numb the tooth, and the purpose of treatment is to remove inflamed or infected tissue, disinfect the inner space and seal it against reinfection.
What you may feel during treatment
After the area becomes numb, you may notice pressure, vibration or the sound of instruments, but you should not have sharp pain. Tell the dentist immediately if you are uncomfortable; more anaesthetic or a pause can often resolve it. Treatment may be completed in one visit or staged depending on infection and tooth complexity.
A protective sheet called a rubber dam keeps the tooth isolated. The canals are cleaned and shaped, disinfected and filled. A temporary or permanent filling closes the opening, and back teeth commonly need a crown afterward to protect the weakened structure.
Recovery after a root canal
Mild tenderness when biting can occur for a few days, especially when the tooth was painful before treatment. Follow the prescribed advice, avoid chewing hard food on a temporary restoration and keep brushing and flossing normally around the area.
Increasing swelling, fever, severe pain that does not settle or a temporary filling that comes out should be reported promptly. Completing the final restoration is essential; an unfinished tooth can fracture or become contaminated again.
When toothache is urgent
Persistent spontaneous pain, night pain, swelling, a bad taste or strong sensitivity to heat can indicate deeper inflammation. Painkillers may temporarily mask symptoms but do not remove infection inside a tooth.
An examination and dental X-ray help determine whether the tooth needs a root canal, a new filling, gum care or another treatment. Early assessment generally gives the dentist more options to preserve the tooth.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a root canal take?
The time and number of visits depend on the tooth, number of canals and infection. Your dentist can estimate this after examination and an X-ray.
Can I go to work after root canal treatment?
Many patients return to usual activities the same day, although numbness and mild tenderness may make a lighter schedule more comfortable.
